In Marin, I participated in the Open Studios program in my home studio, and have also been fortunate to participate for many years with wonderful artists in MarinScapes, a landscape show benefiting Buckelew Programs, a charitable organization. With the comfort of showing my work directly to the public through the Open Studios, I began to develop my own creative process. At that time, I was working mainly with colored pencils, a versatile medium which afforded me the means of working indoors in the evening (after coming home from my daily job) and oil on canvas, painting in my small studio on weekends.
Since moving to the Mendocino coast a little over two years ago, I’ve enjoyed meeting local artists and participating in many art events, including membership in the Mendocino Art Center, and painting with the Plein Air Artists of Mendocino. Plein air is a somewhat challenging, time-honored method of working outdoors. I truly am beginning to enjoy this shared companionship with other artists, and now even venturing out on my own, starting a work in the sometimes chilly air, changing light, and occasional discomfort, and then finishing it in my studio, attempting to stay with the energy that generated its beginning.
In 2008, I won the Grand Prize at the Mendocino Arts for the Parks show, a traveling show promoting the Mendocino County Parks. I am so grateful to the Parks people and those who ideas made this show possible, as it opened up a world of people and opportunities here in my new home. The generosity of the many creative people I've met here seems to permeate the very air.
I quote from Elizabeth Mowry, artist and author of “Landscape Meditations” - “My subject matter of choice remains landscape. Nature was so much a part of my … childhood that the bond was a passionate one. I am comfortable with my motifs because for me they are what I truly know the most about. Even within a traditional venue, creative thinking can work its magic” I, too, feel most comfortable with the landscape, and love the eternally changing, yet familiar scenes, colors, and shapes.
